『 太田茂の40年史 』 Vol. 25 BELVEST
先日お店で開催したベルベストのオーダー会。
こんな田舎町までイタリアから来ていただき嬉しかったですね。
イタリア人も磐田REUNIONのロケーションにはビックリしておりました。
ロケーションもそうなんですが、もっと驚いていた物があります。
30年以上前の「 OLD ENGLAND 」のブレザー。
これにはBELVESTマスターテーラー 、ステファノさんもビックリしておりました。
当時、オールドイングランドの定番ブレザーといえば、
英国のAUSTIN REED（オースチン リード）製というのが当たり前だったんですが。
僕が見つけたのはイタリア製、しかもBELVEST製だったんですね。
オースチンリード製はかなりの人が持っていましたので、
僕は同じ英国製でも少し高いチェスターバリー製のジャケットなんかを好んで購入しておりました。
当時は何処のブランドはイザイア製だとかベルベスト製だとか、
ニットは何処製だとかそんなことばかり調べては購入していた覚えがあります。
40年以上在籍のマスターテーラー ステファノさんがまじまじとタグをチェック、
間違いなくベルベスト製で、自分が携わったかもしれないと嬉しそうにしておりました。
そしてこの素材、現在でもベルベストの生地バンチには定番素材として
使われてるんですね。
肩の作り方なんかも基本的には30年前のモデルと現在ではそんなに変わってないというのが
ベルヴェストの凄いところ。
この作りのモデルは今季からあった、CEOモデルの原型だと言っておりました。
ということで、僕のBELVEST歴は35年といったところですので
なかなか長い間ベルベスト好きなんだなということが今更ながらわかりました。
1980年代後半から、有難いことに前職の会社でヨーロッパに
出張させていただいていたので当時のカッコいいブランドの物は今でも大事に取っておいてあります。
洋服はいろいろ残してあるのですが、
仕事をフランスやイタリアでしていた資料なんかはほぼ無いという、
いかに仕事もせず洋服ばっかり買って楽しんでいたという太田らしさ。
当時の会社にも申し訳ないところ。
この辺が、ビームスの中村さんとの違いですね。
反省しなければいけないところですが、今となってはどうしようもありません。
僕の頭の中の経験値と当時の服を見ながら思い出していくことしかできません。
それでも経験のない服屋さんよりは少し語れるとは思いますね。
色々なイタリアンブランドがあり、それぞれいい物だと思いますが、
REUNIONはこれからもBELVEST推しでいかせていただきますので

The other day, we held a Belvest custom-order event at our store.
It was wonderful to have them come all the way from Italy to this small town.
Even the Italians were surprised by the location of Iwata REUNION.
While the location was certainly a surprise, there was something else that surprised them even more.
An “OLD ENGLAND” blazer from over 30 years ago.
Even Belvest’s master tailor, Stefano, was taken aback by this.
Back then, when people thought of a classic Old England blazer,
it was a given that it was made by the British brand Austin Reed.
But the one I found was made in Italy—and by Belvest, no less.
Since so many people owned Austin Reed blazers,
I preferred to buy slightly more expensive British-made jackets, like those from Chesterbury.
I remember back then, I would always research things like which brands were made by Isaia or Belvest,
or where the knitwear was made, before making a purchase.
Stefano, a master tailor with over 40 years of service, scrutinized the tag closely.
He confirmed it was definitely a Belvest piece and looked delighted, saying he might have been involved in its creation.
And this fabric is still used as a staple in Belvest’s fabric swatch books today.
The amazing thing about Belvest is that the construction of the shoulders, for example, hasn’t changed much from the models of 30 years ago.
He told me that this model, with its construction, served as the prototype for the CEO model introduced this season.
So, since my history with Belvest spans about 35 years,
I’ve only just realized how long I’ve actually been a fan of the brand.
Starting in the late 1980s, I was fortunate enough to be sent on business trips to Europe
through my previous company, so I still carefully keep the cool items from those brands to this day.
I’ve kept various pieces of clothing,
but I have almost no records from my work in France or Italy—
which is so typical of me, Ota, showing just how much I was enjoying buying clothes instead of actually working.
I feel a bit guilty toward my former company about that.
This is where I differ from Mr. Nakamura at BEAMS.
It’s something I should reflect on, but there’s nothing I can do about it now.
All I can do is reminisce by looking at the clothes from back then and drawing on the experience stored in my head.
Still, I think I can talk about it a bit more than a clothing store owner with no experience.
There are many Italian brands, and I think they’re all great,
but at REUNION, I’ll continue to champion BELVEST,
so I hope you’ll continue to support us.
